THE AIM OF THIS QUALIFICATION:

The aim of a Level 2 Plant Operations VQ (Vocational Qualification) is to assess learners who have the knowledge, skills, and practical competence to operate plant machinery safely and efficiently in a variety of construction or civil engineering environments, ensuring compliance with legal, health, and safety standards.

WHO DO WE RECOMMEND FOR THIS QUALIFICATION?

The Level 2 Plant Operations VQ should be attended by individuals who operate, plant machinery on construction or civil engineering sites, including plant operators.

THE CANDIDATE MUST BE ABLE TO:

  • Present evidence demonstrating their competence in the selected skilled trade.

  • Show that they possess the necessary skills and knowledge for their chosen category.

  • Exhibit understanding of health and safety regulations and apply safe working practices.

ASSESSMENT SUMMARY

  • Introduction to plant operations and machinery types.

  • Health, safety, and legal requirements, including PPE and risk assessments.

  • Operation, manoeuvring, and maintenance of plant machinery.

  • Practical skills development and safe working practices.

  • Communication, teamwork, and environmental awareness.

  • Assessment to verify competence and knowledge.

LOCATIONS

The SVQ in Plant Operations is assessed through practical, site-based evaluations to demonstrate competence in real working conditions.

ASSESSMENT DURATION

1 Day.

CERTIFICATION

Upon successful completion, candidates receive a site‑assessed SVQ Plant Operations certification, verifying their competence, skills, and knowledge in operating plant machinery safely and effectively. The certification is nationally recognised and demonstrates compliance with industry and health and safety standards.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

Candidates must have successfully completed a CSCS Health & Safety test within the last 24 months and hold a current, valid CPCS or NPORS trained operator card to be eligible to start the VQ.
