THE AIM OF THE COURSE:

The aim of the New Roads and Street Works Act (NRSWA) Operative Course is to assess delegates who have the knowledge and practical skills required to carry out street works and road works safely, efficiently, and in compliance with the New Roads and Street Works Act 1991. It ensures operatives understand how to complete excavation, backfilling, and reinstatement to the required standards.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND THE COURSE?

The New Roads and Street Works Operatives course should be attended by all operatives who are directly involved in carrying out road and street works, including tasks such as excavation, installation, maintenance, or repair of street infrastructure, as well as those responsible for ensuring work is performed safely and in accordance with legal and industry standards.

COURSE SUMMARY

  • Introduction to Street Works Operative Role

    • Understanding the duties and responsibilities of an operative on-site.

    • Overview of different types of street works and operatives’ involvement.

  • Legislation, Codes of Practice, and Industry Standards

    • Key laws governing street works (e.g., New Roads and Street Works Act).

    • National and local codes of practice.

    • Compliance requirements for legal and safe operations.

  • Health and Safety Awareness

    • Identification of hazards on-site.

    • Safe working practices, including personal protective equipment (PPE).

    • Risk assessment procedures and emergency protocols.

  • Traffic Management and Site Safety

    • Principles of traffic control around work zones.

    • Signage, barriers, and pedestrian safety measures.

    • Safe operation of machinery and equipment on or near roads.

  • Excavation, Reinstatement, and Maintenance Techniques

    • Safe digging and excavation methods.

    • Correct reinstatement of roads, pavements, and utilities.

    • Repair and maintenance techniques for different surfaces and utilities.

  • Environmental Awareness and Minimizing Disruption

    • Reducing noise, dust, and traffic disruption.

    • Awareness of environmental regulations and best practices.

  • Assessment and Competency Verification

    • Written and/or practical assessments to confirm understanding.

    • Ensuring operatives are competent to perform street works safely and legally.

COURSE DURATION

5 Days.

CERTIFICATION

Successful operatives will receive a CABWI certificate and an SWQR card, valid for five years, demonstrating compliance with industry standards and legal requirements on site.
