THE AIM OF THE COURSE:

The aim of a 2-day New Roads and Street Works Act (NRSWA) refresher course is to update and reassess existing operatives or supervisors to ensure they remain competent, safe, and legally compliant to continue working on public highways.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND THE COURSE?

This course should be attended by existing NRSWA-qualified operatives or supervisors whose Street Works cards are due for renewal and who need to refresh and reassess their skills to remain legally compliant when working on public highways.

COURSE SUMMARY

  • Introduction to the Street Works Operative Role

    • Recap of key duties and on-site responsibilities.

    • Overview of common street works tasks and the operative’s role in each.

  • Legislation, Codes of Practice & Current Standards

    • Refresher on the New Roads and Street Works Act and related legal requirements.

    • Updates to national and local codes of practice.

    • Emphasis on maintaining compliance and safe working standards.

  • Health & Safety Awareness Refresher

    • Review of typical site hazards and safe behaviour.

    • Correct use of PPE and adherence to safety rules.

    • Updated risk assessment processes and emergency actions.

  • Traffic Management & Site Safety

    • Revised principles of traffic and pedestrian control around worksites.

    • Correct use of signage, barriers, and protective systems.

    • Safe operation of tools, plant, and equipment near the highway.

  • Excavation, Reinstatement & Maintenance Techniques

    • Refresher on safe excavation practices and avoiding underground services.

    • Correct reinstatement methods for roads, footways, and utilities.

    • Updates on maintenance standards and best practices.

  • Environmental Considerations & Reducing Disruption

    • Techniques to limit noise, dust, waste, and traffic impact.

    • Review of environmental guidelines and responsible working practices.

  • Assessment & Competency Re-Certification

    • Completion of written and/or practical reassessments.

    • Verification of continued competence for SWQR renewal.

    • Ensures operatives remain safe, compliant, and qualified to work on highways.

COURSE DURATION

2 Days.

CERTIFICATION

Successful completion of the refresher assessments renews the delegate’s Street Works Qualification Register (SWQR) card for five years, confirming continued competence and legal authorisation to carry out street works. Delegates will also receive a CABWI Certificate upon completion.
