THE AIM OF THE COURSE:

The aim of this 2-day novice Signing, Lighting, and Guarding course is to provide inexperienced Operatives with the foundational knowledge and practical skills required to safely set up, maintain, adjust, and remove traffic management systems. The course ensures operatives understand how to protect themselves, road users, and the public while working in compliance with current legal and industry standards.

THE OBJECTIVES OF THE COURSE ARE TO ENABLE DELEGATES TO:

  • Understand the legal requirements, duties, and responsibilities relating to street works and traffic management
  • Learn how to safely set up, maintain, adjust, and remove signs, barriers, cones, and lighting
  • Identify hazards and apply appropriate safety procedures to protect workers and the public
  • Understand basic traffic management layouts for simple works
  • Minimise disruption to traffic and pedestrians while maintaining site safety
  • Demonstrate competence through both practical and theoretical assessments

WHO SHOULD ATTEND THE COURSE?

This course is designed for new entrants (novices) to the street works industry who will be involved in signing, lighting, and guarding activities. It is suitable for operatives who need to gain the necessary skills and knowledge to work safely on or near the highway in compliance with legal requirements.

COURSE SUMMARY

Introduction to Traffic Management

  • Basic principles of traffic management
  • Importance of signing, lighting, and guarding
  • Roles and responsibilities of operatives

Legislation and Codes of Practice

  • Overview of relevant legislation (e.g. New Roads and Street Works Act)
  • Codes of Practice and safety requirements
  • Legal responsibilities on site

Traffic Signs, Barriers, and Lighting

  • Types of signs, cones, barriers, and warning lights
  • Correct positioning and spacing
  • Inspection and maintenance requirements

Safe Working Practices

  • Risk assessment and hazard identification
  • Use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
  • Safe systems of work
  • Emergency procedures

Setting Up and Removing Traffic Management Systems

  • Basic site layouts for signing, lighting, and guarding
  • Practical set-up exercises
  • Monitoring and maintaining traffic management
  • Safe removal of equipment

Environmental and Public Safety Awareness

  • Protecting pedestrians and vulnerable road users
  • Minimising disruption to traffic flow
  • Maintaining access and safety around works

Assessment and Competency Verification

  • Practical and theoretical assessments
  • Demonstration of competence in a controlled environment

COURSE DURATION

2 Days

CERTIFICATION

Successful candidates will receive a CABWI certificate and an SWQR card (where applicable), valid for five years, confirming their competence as a novice operative in signing, lighting, and guarding in accordance with industry standards and legal requirements.
