THE AIM OF THE COURSE:

The aim of the New Roads and Street Works Act (NRSWA) Supervisor course is to assess those responsible for overseeing street works and road works have the knowledge and skills to plan, monitor, and ensure that work on public highways is carried out safely, efficiently, and in accordance with legal requirements.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND THE COURSE?

This course is suitable for anyone who supervises or oversees street works or road works on public highways under the New Roads and Street Works Act 1991. It’s designed for site supervisors, managers, and team leaders responsible for ensuring that works are carried out safely, correctly, and in line with legal requirements.

COURSE SUMMARY

1. Introduction to Street Works Supervisor Role

  • Understand the duties and responsibilities of a supervisor on-site.

  • Overview of different types of street works and supervisory responsibilities.

2. Legislation, Codes of Practice, and Industry Standards

  • Key laws governing street works, including the New Roads and Street Works Act.

  • National and local codes of practice.

  • Ensuring compliance and overseeing safe operations on site.

3. Health and Safety Awareness

  • Identification of hazards and risk assessment oversight.

  • Ensuring safe working practices, including correct use of personal protective equipment (PPE).

  • Implementing emergency protocols and site safety management.

4. Traffic Management and Site Safety

  • Planning and supervising traffic control around work zones.

  • Correct placement of signage, barriers, and pedestrian safety measures.

  • Supervising the safe operation of machinery and equipment on or near roads.

5. Excavation, Reinstatement, and Maintenance Oversight

  • Supervising safe digging and excavation methods.

  • Ensuring correct reinstatement of roads, pavements, and utilities.

  • Monitoring repair and maintenance techniques for different surfaces and utilities.

6. Communication and Team Leadership

  • Effective communication with operatives, clients, and other stakeholders.

  • Coordinating teams to maintain safety, efficiency, and compliance.

7. Environmental Awareness and Minimizing Disruption

  • Implementing measures to reduce noise, dust, and traffic disruption.

  • Ensuring adherence to environmental regulations and best practices.

8. Assessment and Competency Verification

  • Written and practical assessments to confirm supervisory knowledge and competence.

  • Ensuring supervisors are capable of managing street works safely, legally, and efficiently.

Course Duration

5 Days

CERTIFICATION

Successful supervisors will receive a CABWI certificate and an SWQR card, valid for five years, demonstrating compliance with industry standards and legal requirements on site.
